Sheringham is the kind of working coastal town North Norfolk does best — a flint-built High Street that still has fishmongers, butchers and independent bakeries; a shingle-and-sand beach that holds its blue flag year after year; and a steam railway that rolls in from Holt and pulls visitors straight onto the seafront. It's smaller and quieter than nearby Cromer but punches well above its weight on food, drink and walking.

The North Norfolk Railway (the 'Poppy Line') is the easy headline attraction, but the real Sheringham experience happens on foot. The promenade walk east along the cliffs toward Beeston Bump and the Coast Path west toward Weybourne are two of the finest short walks on the entire Norfolk coast. In town, the Two Lifeboats, the Lobster and the Crown anchor a strong real-ale scene; for food, Joyful West's, No.10 and a clutch of brilliant fish & chip shops on the seafront cover everything from a quick lunch to a sit-down evening meal.

Holiday accommodation around Sheringham leans toward independent guest houses, B&Bs and a handful of well-regarded caravan and camping sites — Kelling Heath and Woodhill among them — set back in the woods and within a short drive of the beach. The Coasthopper bus links Sheringham along the North Norfolk coast all the way to Hunstanton, so it makes an excellent walking-and-pubs base.
